Information

The Chesil Bank and the Fleet Nature Reserve encompass the internationally renowned Chesil Bank storm beach, the Fleet lagoon and Portland Harbour. The Chesil Beach Centre is situated on the shore of the south eastern end of the Fleet lagoon where the only sea influence occurs through a small entrance at Ferrybridge.

Chesil Beach Stretching Towards Charmouth

The site boasts a wide variety of marine habitats ranging from the turbulent oceanic conditions in Lyme bay to the extremely sheltered waters of the Fleet. The Fleet itself supports a huge variety of marine species which provide food for a multitude of both resident and migratory birds. The close proximity of the three varying environments make Chesil Bank and the Fleet Nature Reserve an outstanding area of natural beauty and an excellent source of research and recreation.

The centre commands a breathtaking view of the Fleet all the way to Abbotsbury where the lagoon ends. The centre, with its original internal decoration depicting the unique surrounding area, provides a wide range of activities for both young and old. The ever popular touch table is always changing and contains many of the special creatures found in the area. The newly installed touch screen, audio presentation and a wide range of other interactive features bring unique insight into the Nature Reserve.
